Santorini, Greece (Pt 2)

Hi All,

Another few days on Santorini where the weather is blue skies, slight breeze and 28, 28, 28, 29, 28, 28 etc. So after some sight-seeing it was time for the girls to head off to the shops and start our shopping experiences. The boys stayed around the pools and experienced the R & R of the island.

First stop was to taste the food of Greece, with the 24 hour bakery just up the road from the Hotel. The best spinach pie and cheese pie around. Happy to give a free ad to anyone while on Santorini. We bought up big for all to have a good lunch.

Then off for some real shopping. Greece has an over abundance of shoe stores with Greek and Italian made shoes, hard to find any shoes made in China. We felt obliged to keep the Greek economy well supplied with Euros so visited many stores.

More assistance to the Greek linen industry was considered with purchases of tablecloths, and runners along with some items of olive oil, from Greece of course.
With such sunny days, the need for larger hats was a necessity and the search was on for a “good” hat as well.

There is also a fantastic local glass industry which needed to be supported as well. So into some of the glass and ceramic stores in the main shopping town of Fira we ventured. With so many shops to consider you could get lost in all the alley ways and turns of the small street, with just shoppers, shoppers, shoppers.

However we also visited an ancient town with a dig going on as money allows at Akrotiri, which was only discovered in early 1990’s but dates back to 4,000 years ago with a Minoan civilisation. However a volcanic eruption destroyed this settlement and that of the
Minoans on Crete.

But we did learn that they too had many shops and large vats of product to sell to all. After a day of shopping it was back to the hotel for another wonderful greek meal to end the day with a magnificent sunset of the Caldera of the Mediterranean sea. Sunsets just don’t get any better than those from Santorini.

Love to all
