Dalmatian Coast, Croatia (Pt 1)

Hi All,

Next adventure takes us, cruising north from Dubrovnik to Split along what is called the Dalmatian Coast.  This has beautiful blue waters, clear blue skies and temperatures of 31 – 32 degrees each day in the summer.  So nice to know we are not experiencing the cold weather of the east coast of Aus.

Our cruiser is the MS Vita, which has 18 cabins and a mix of Aussies, Kiwis, Americans, and French. The boats line up against each other at the dock and you walk across 5 – 10 cruisers to get off shore then return the same way when going back to your cabin. You need to know which ship you came from so you can return to the right one. Or perhaps you might get lost on the adjoining vessel, which wouldn’t be too bad either.

Our departure point was the Port of Gruz, the main commercial town of Dubrovnik, with its lovely parks and exercise equipment to prepare those leaving to get in shape for a weeks cruise and the great Croatian food on offer.

The markets of Gruz were filled with sellers of flowers, fruit and veggies of all types. The summer fruits of Europe on offer include the biggest and darkest cherries you can ever find. Always a delight to travel to Europe in their summer months just to test the cherries that come from Spain and sold across Europe at this time of year.

Our first stop is a monastery established in the 12th century, but over time with many wars,
and occupiers it is in disrepair, but thankfully being restored to its former glory. The day comes to a close with a dinner over-looking the small harbour of Mljet with the sun setting and providing a picture postcard view of the island.
